Hi Margaret Avenue families and students!
I hope everyone is safe, happy and healthy. Hopefully the students have found activities to keep themselves busy and continue to connect with their friends through social media during this stressful time. To help students navigate these unprecedented times, I have created a Guidance Google Classroom that is full of resources to keep students busy! It has journal pages, mindfulness exercises, colouring sheets, information about Covid-19 and more!
The class code is: 2w6gijt
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Congratulations to your Grade 8 student who has successfully completed the first term at Margaret Avenue! With Term 2 beginning, we can begin to look forward to next year and all the exciting adventures that await our Mavericks as they begin their transition to high school.
From Friday February 14 at 4:00 p.m. to Thursday February 27 at 4:00 p.m, Grade 8 students have access to the website called MyWay where students can choose their Grade 9 courses. Attached, you will find a MyWay guide to help you navigate through the program and how to select courses. Students have had a presentation in class for how to use MyWay and the presentation is posted on their Google Classroom for further guidance.
On the MyWay system, you will be able to see teacher recommendations for the strand they believe will help your student be successful in Grade 9 in for the compulsory credits (Academic or Applied -English, French, Math, Science, Geography). If you have any questions about the recommendations made by the teachers, please contact the subject teacher for further conversation.
The expectation is that students complete the course selection process at home, choosing their Grade 9 courses with parent and/or guardian input. Once the student has completed the course selection, please ensure that it is printed and signed by both your student and parent/guardian. This completed course selection form needs to be printed at home and should be returned to your child’s Core teacher. If you do not have access to a computer, internet or a printer at home, we will provide an opportunity for students to complete the course selection process in our school library, where students can select their courses with assistance and support from our guidance team, as well as print the course selection form and bring it home to get signed by a parent/guardian. We ask that all course selections are completed and returned with signatures no later than by Tuesday, February 25 to your child’s Core teacher.
If you have any questions about the course selection process, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Students can also make a guidance appointment to discuss course selections and assistance at school.
This is the link to the Google Slide presentation that has been shared with the students.

Grade 8 students have been busy learning about high school magnet programs, specialty programs, and high school courses they can take next year. Students who are applying to any magnet/specialty programs have been encouraged to attend high school information nights, talk to their guidance counselor Mrs Galbraith, asked a teacher to be their teacher reference and visit the high school’s website for more information about the program. Most students applying to specialty programs need their report cards from Grade 7 (June report card) and Grade 8 (progress report). Students will either have to scan their own report cards or talk to Mrs. Galbraith about having their report cards scanned and sent to them. At this point, any student who has talked to Mrs. Galbraith or filled out the google form will have their report cards scanned for them and in their Google Drives under their Shared with Me tab.
Students have been encouraged to ask their teacher reference for a recommendation letter before they leave for the December holidays. The deadline is soon after we come back from the holidays (January 15-16) and not all teachers will have time when we return.
Please ask your student to make a guidance appointment to talk about specialty programs if they are interested in applying and Mrs Galbraith can give them more information about the program and the steps to apply if they are interested.
