Our students and staff participated in the Innovative Math Practices initiative last year. This Initiative is a joint project with our District School Board and the Ministry of Education. The focus of the initiative was to utilize collaboration in our teaching and learning practices to encourage and develop student voice and student engagement. We also utilized 21st Century Tools like iPads, Social Media and a variety of Apps to support students in demonstrating and documenting their thinking and learning.
As importantly, our staff demonstrated a willingness to step outside of their comfort zone and take risks in their classrooms and in their teaching pedagogy. They provided multiple opportunities for students to investigate the concepts of Math by using collaboration as a method for students to share their thinking with each other, while utilizing the iPads provided by our District School Board to document their thinking and learning. Our students quickly embraced this active and affirming approach to learning Math and eagerly participated in the project with our staff.
Our staff being able to model and reflect on their learning and act as co-learners with our students, was documented by our District School Board on the 2014-2015 System Video. Please join us in celebrating the hard work and extra efforts of our students and staff by making some time to watch the video here:
Optimizing Student Learning and Achievement for All Students
We are also pleased to announce that we have been selected to continue with this project for Math and for English for this upcoming school year! We are truly doing great things for our students each day, in every classroom, to better prepare them for the world that lies ahead. And so, we wanted to share our deep Maverick Pride with all of you!
